A litter box, also known as a litter tray, litter box, cat box, or outdoor litter tray, is an indoor/outdoor litter collection container for cats, rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas, dogs, and other domesticated animals that naturally or through prolonged training will use such a repository to dispose of their excrement and urine. Such a container has a cover which can be secured with tacks or screws and typically has a scoop that allows users to scoop out the litter, removing the hardened poop and old litter from inside. Scrubbers are not required when using an outdoor litter tray since the elements may dull the scum. The tray may also come equipped with a heat lamp just above the litter box to assist in stimulating the animals in the wild. Clumping litter, also known as hard-clumping litter or scoop clumps, consists of a finely ground material consisting of crushed walnut shells, pine shavings, and/or wood chips. Cats naturally make use of this natural material in order to satisfy their instinctual cleaning needs. Clumping litter was marketed in commercial amounts by Raggedy Earth Products Corporation since the mid-1990s, though its manufacturing process did not become entirely void of human involvement. Though most pet owners have largely switched to clumping litter over the years because of this relatively low cost, there are still some people who prefer the natural or clump form. For these individuals, there are several brands available on the market today that do not use wood or walnut shells, yet still provide the cleaning ability that cats are looking for. Silica is one such natural alternative. Cats are able to digest silica and obtain the beneficial nutrients that it provides, such as nitrogen, magnesium, iron, and silicon. Also, cats have been known to carry amoebic cysts inside of their feces, which are usually caused by an obstruction in the intestines-the reason why they are unable to ingest silica. Using a moisture free kitty litter in combination with a generous amount of organic spring water can eliminate this problem, making it easier for your cat to defecate and reduce the smell associated with solid waste. Cat odors come from the metabolic processes of the bacteria and yeasts living in your kitty's digestive tract. When they break down protein, they produce carbon dioxide and water, which often have an unpleasant smell. This process is accelerated by the presence of ketones and fatty acids (which create an unpleasant odor even if they aren't volatile). By replacing some of these volatile organic compounds with water, your kitty litter can neutralize the odor-causing compounds and greatly diminish the amount of ketones and fatty acids produced. Using a moist kitty litter combined with a generous amount of water can solve many of the odor problems associated with cat poop. So what types of other absorbent items can you find to help reduce the smell associated with your kitty's waste? There are several absorbent products that can be used in conjunction with a clay litter box. There are even kits available that are premade and which include a pre-measured clay pellet. The absorbent granules and clays included in these kits are extremely dense and effective at absorbing a wide range of liquids and substances. These kits make a very good addition to your cat's litter box. There are also several clumping cat litter products on the market today that utilize bentonite clay as the major ingredient. Bentonite clay works by creating small hollow clusters that contain granules of calcium carbonate, which are then absorbed by the cat's intestinal tract. These clumps can also be softened by adding some water, which helps them become more absorbent than any of the individual granules of clay alone. Bentonite clumping cat litter has been scientifically proven to effectively absorb a wide variety of substances, including pet urine, human urine, and various chemicals found in cleaning products and pesticides.
